12 tips for a successful job advertisement

How do you ensure that your job advertisement attracts as many suitable candidates as possible? Some tips.
  1. Job title

    Choose a clear job title.

    • Do not use the job title that is used internally in your company.
    • Opt for a standard title for which your target group is looking.
    • Always make your job title as short, concise and clear as possible.

For example: Customer Service Employee instead of Customer Advisor.

  2. Job description

Clearly explain the job title. How?

    • Write a fluent text.
    • Use synonyms: the more keywords, the more easily the job is found, and the higher your job advertisement ranks in Google and on Jobat.be.
    • Only list the relevant tasks.
  3. Profile

The profile should contain the relevant keywords (diploma, education, specific knowledge, etc.) that candidates enter when they look for a job.
How can you optimise the profile?

    • Add concrete job requirements so that the right target group feels addressed.
    • Do not set too many demands in terms of knowledge and know-how.
  4. The offer

Favourable working conditions are one of the most important reasons for a candidate to respond to a job offer. How do you make your offer stand out?

    • Do not choose a standard text.
    • Tailor the employment conditions as closely as possible to your target group.
    • Be as concrete as possible.
  5. Company description

Applicants attach increasing importance to the mission and vision of a company.

    • Briefly describe the values and vision of the company. Where do you want to go as a company in the future?
    • Describe the company culture so that the applicant knows whether he or she will fit into the organisation.
    • There is no need for a complete list of the company's achievements.
  6. Place of employment

Candidates often first look at the location of the job. You should therefore state the city, municipality, postal code and/or region of the employment. This increases the likelihood that the job will appear in the search results when applicants search by region.

  7. Contact details

Ensure that the candidate can easily contact the recruiter. You should therefore state the name, telephone number and e-mail address of the contact person. If candidates have to apply through your website, please enter the address of the application page itself, and not that of the homepage. In this way, candidates will not give up because they could not find the job on your website.

  8. Job type

Select the appropriate job type, so that people with the right profiles will see the job. Candidates often receive daily and weekly jobs via e-mail, based on their chosen job types.

  9. Language area

Add jobs in the correct language area, so that the people with the right profiles find the job offer. If you paste a French-language job in the Dutch-speaking area, French-speaking candidates will not see this job.

Finally, some general tips that will make your job offer more powerful ...

  1. Always think about the potential candidate

When you draw up a job advertisement, it is important to look at the target group in more detail.

    • Check up on how your target group communicates, and how you can best address your potential candidates.
    • What is interesting for the candidate?
    • Mention career opportunities.
  2. Active form

Write the text in the active form. This makes the reading more pleasant, and avoids creating a certain formal distance.

  3. Summaries versus body text

Vary between bullets and body text, so that the job offer is more pleasant to read and easier to scan at a glance. It is a fact that most candidates first read through a job description diagonally before they start looking at it in more detail.

Ensure that it is clear which basic skills the applicant should master, and what is expected of him/her.
